X lets fans pick the tunes for spring tour

Los Angeles punk pioneers X will let fans decide the setlists for the band's upcoming spring tour, which also benefits a charity for struggling musicians.

The outing--which the band is dubbing the "X-TRL Tour" after MTV's iconic "Total Request Live" program that exhorted viewers to call in and vote for their favorites--kicks off April 9 in Portland, OR, and runs through a June 23 appearance in Minneapolis, MN. The 18-city outing includes an April 19 slot at Indio, CA's Coachella Festival. Details are below.

X fans who want to help pick the band's setlist for the dates can vote for songs at the group's website. As for the benefit portion of the tour, X has teamed up with the Sweet Relief Musician Funds to offer tickets and backstage passes for the upcoming show to raise funds for the charity. Details on participating in auctions for the passes can be found at the organization's website.

Last year, X celebrated its 31st anniversary by reuniting the group's original lineup--singer Exene Cervenka, singer/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D.J. Bonebrake--for an extensive tour schedule. The band has also discussed the possibility of returning to the recording studio to work on a long overdue follow-up to its most recent studio album, 1993's "Hey Zeus!"

"We're thinking about it, working on it, trying to figure out where that might fit. It's not totally out of the question," Doe told LiveDaily last year.

X was formed in the burgeoning Los Angeles punk scene of 1977 when co-founders Zoom and Doe "placed virtually identically worded ads in the same paper on the same day looking to start a band," according to a press release. Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek discovered the band and produced (and performed on) X's debut album, 1980's seminal "Los Angeles," the first of several highly regarded releases from the band in the early '80s.
