Metallica offers single-song downloads from live archives

More than five years after launching its for-pay concert-download service, Metallica will now offer single-track downloads of live songs on the site.

The new service, which will be incorporated into Metallica's existing live-download site--will allow fans to purchase individual tracks from any recorded concert dating back to March 2, 2004. Tracks will be priced at $.99 each, while full shows will continue to go for $9.95. High-quality FLAC versions of entire sets can be purchased for $12.95.

"This is the next logical step in a process that began back in 1991 when we first implemented the 'Taper Section' at our shows, where our fans were encouraged to bring in their own gear to record the show, and then take home their very own 'bootleg' of the concert they had just seen," Lars Ulrich said in a press statement.

"This technology will enable our fans to get the best possible recording of the show, without having to hold a microphone in the air for the entire night."

The band kicked off the second leg of its World Magnetic Tour last month in Nashville, TN, and continues the trip tonight (10/1) in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with dates lined up through mid-December. Details are included below.

The metal icons, who earlier this year were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, continue to support last year's Rick Rubin-produced "Death Magnetic." The group's ninth studio album--and first to feature bassist Robert Trujillo--debuted atop The Billboard 200 chart, earning Metallica its fifth consecutive No. 1 debut.
