Live Review: Pixies in Los Angeles

In recent weeks, veteran acts Devo and Echo & the Bunnymen revisited classic albums from the late '70s and early and mid-'80s with concerts in Los Angeles. During their three-night stand at the Hollywood Palladium, the Pixies brought the concept up to the end of the '80s with a set built around "Doolittle," the Boston-spawned band's 1989 major-label debut, which laid the groundwork for Nirvana's "Nevermind." The tour, celebrating the album's 20th anniversary, hit Europe earlier this fall and is now winding its way through nine cities US cities for 22 shows.  / Read more

Evaluating Rickie Lee Jones ' new album, "Balm in Gilead," feels like an attempt to answer questions from a Taoist text. Is a journey complete when one returns home? If an adult connects with their youth, is a lesson finished or has it just begun? Jones has ventured on a linear journey over the last 30 years, not so much detouring as taking occasional off ramps, yet this latest stop is the first great reminder of where she started.  / Read more

Live Review: Devo in Los Angeles, CA

"What strange concept," Devo 's Gerald Casale said between "Gut Feeling" and "Come Back Jonny," near the conclusion of his band's first performance on a 16-show, eight-city tour that finds them alternating between their first album and their third. It might be strange for the Ohio quintet to turn back the clock 31 years to play "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!," a landmark in American new wave, from start to finish, but their brisk and intense execution reaffirmed the importance of this troupe.  / Read more
